His treating physicians said:
“After presenting to an outside facility with chest pain, Sen. Sanders was diagnosed with a myocardial infarction."
A myocardial infarction is a heart attack.
When Bernie Sanders had a heart attack he went to the hospital.
When should you or a friend do the same? Time is critical in these sorts of situations.
Here are things to look for:
We are looking for:
-Chest pain, often described as crushing, dull, heavy, squeezing
-Pain that radiates along arms, down to upper abdomen, up to jaw
-Difficulty breathing
-Anxiety
The patient should not be allergic to aspirin, no history of asthma, no blood clotting meds, and is conscious/able to swallow
And yes, you should have already called 911
Between 1/4 and 1/3 of individuals will not present these typical signs
Thus important to have high index of suspicion
The heart is a muscle that like any other requires oxygen
A heart attack occurs when blood flow is cut off or seriously reduced and muscle damage begins
Arteries which supply the heart can become clogged over time
