My latest for @NewsHour. Spoke with key players in the Ukrainian Prosecutor’s dismissal to find out if Trump’s theory - that Biden wanted him fired to protect his son’s business interests - holds any water. Full story here:
Ukraine’s former president Poroshenko, who faced Biden’s pressure at the time, told me they only discussed reforms to the prosecutor’s office, not Burisma, the company Hunter Biden worked for.
Ukrainian finance minister Oksana Markarova told me that the only conditions attached to the loan guarantees Biden threatened to pull if Ukraine didn’t get rid of the Prosecutor General were “reform and market oriented.”
A widely overlooked fact in much of the coverage of the Ukrainian prosecutor’s dismissal are its local origins. Here’s MP Yehor Sobolev calling for signatures for a no confidence vote in September 2015 half a year before Biden threatened to hold back the $1Billion loan guarantee.
Here’s @dkaleniuk, protesting outside the PGO around the same time and calling for the prosecutor’s dismissal. Anti corruption activists were begging the US to get involved because the “Prosecutor General’s Office did not want to help to provide evidence” in corruption cases.
