And there it is, the root of it all: male anxiety that the old authoritarian model is becoming obsolete as more women are educated and self-directed. It’s prompting a whole continuum of desperate behaviors. I’ve got news for you, boys — it’s been over for a while.

Companionate marriage has been around — and generally suppressed by authoritarian forces — for centuries. The debate over same-sex marriage wasn’t just homophobia, it was fear that same-sex marriage provides different, more egalitarian models of relationships. And also homophobia
“Traditional” marriage relies on an authoritarian model which is then transmitted culturally through generations. But here’s the thing, traditional gender roles aren’t even traditional. They were pushed upon us in the 1950s to pressure women out of the workforce.
That's because men were coming back from the wars and wanted their old jobs back, and didn't know how to adapt. So... women were subjected to cultural manipulation from the top down in the name of national security. "Revolutionary Road" was about this. pbs.org/wgbh/americane…
Companionate marriage is the single biggest threat to authoritarianism. One person spouting ideas is a crackpot. Two people, though, are potentially fomenting revolution. And no outsider can ever crack the code of intimacy formed over years. Love is the most powerful force.
I'm not saying that because I'm a hippie-dippie hug-it-out California girl, although underneath everything else I kind of am. I just know my history.

All those "trad" men want nothing more than a bang-maid, or someone to mine ideas from. They cannot even imagine wanting nights of conversations or simply enjoying one anothers' company, or the peace that comes from knowing that your partner has your back.
That's why misogynists are so tedious and such followers. No imagination. And yeah, I'm including women in my "misogynists" commentary. The patriarchy doesn't discriminate.

Finally, after looking at my mentions one final time — always a mistake — I want to add that if your response to this thread advocating for egalitarian relationships is a veiled threat couched as concern about what men might do in response, you’re absolutely telling on yourself
You want to have some authoritarian shit? Have at it, if you can find someone who is truly on board! But stay the fuck out of my life, on both a personal and a policy level.
