Here is the problem with allowing off-shore drilling: the oil and gas industry have absolutely NO IDEA how to clean up after themselves after creating disasters.
Seriously, when your primary response to an inevitable event like the Deepwater Horizon
The business model of ExxonMobil is to invest in flashy, misleading television commercials and republican MoCs while turning the earth and its oceans into sterile wastelands, wresting every last drop of potential profits no matter the cost to quality of life.
And every little oil producer wants to be ExxonMobil. They're not alone, and they have gone global.
Why do you think Putin gave Rex Tillerson a medal before *45 named him Secretary of State?
It's because Rex was instrumental in helping Russia drill
in the arctic, even while Russia was under sanctions for invading Ukraine.
We'd do well to bring the hammer down on the oil and gas giants. Left to their own devices (e.g., unregulated), they have very little interest in safety.
From Blowout:
" Turns out an oil rig toppled by Hurricane Ivan in 2004 has been leaking, 12 miles off the coast of Louisiana, every day since then."
THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO STOP IT. After 15 years.
500 barrels a day.
It's been almost 30 years since the Exxon Valdez dumped its toxic load off Alaska's coast, and it's still being "cleaned up".
You know those birds they show getting washed with Dawn?
Most of them die anyway. The oil spills are quite toxic.
