Good morning! Before you go to church today, a friendly reminder that the ongoing epidemic of violence against trans people, particularly Black trans women, has nothing to do with sex work and everything to do with a lack of resources and highly severe social stigmatization.
If you want to address violence + discrimination against trans people, start with access to jobs, affordable housing, and electing leaders who speak out against transphobia and support comprehensive non-discrimination legislation like the Equality Act.

Sex work? Not the problem.
But if you are so inclined and so obsessed with sex work, please realize that legalizing sex work will significantly ease the horrific burden of stigmatization, financial challenges, and needless incarceration of trans people.

I don't think it's appropriate to call for Bernie Sanders to drop out over his heart attack. If the doctors cleared him and he and his family are making an informed choice, that's all that matters.

That being said, I find it more than a little fascinating... (1/2)
...that in 2016, when Hillary Clinton was diagnosed with pneumonia on the campaign trail, commentators were viciously sexist and ageist and aggressively questioned whether she was medically fit.

Male candidates seem to consistently get a pass where women never do.
In fact, I seem to recall a certain journalist tweeting out a video of Hillary Clinton stumbling as she got into a van on her way to the hospital with a caption of something like "Oh my god..."

Because great journalism always decenters nuance for spectacle, right?

It was ten months after Trump's inauguration, and the entire political world was focused on the Virginia statewide elections because of what it might predict for America's future, and I was focused because of an historic House Delegate race that might predict mine. (thread)
In Virginia's 13th House Delegate District, incumbent Bob Marshall was running for a 14th consecutive term after developing a reputation as one of the most aggressively anti-LGBTQ legislators in the country. His opponent? Former journalist and proud trans woman Danica Roem.
Bob Marshall ran on his abysmal record and called himself Virginia's "chief homophobe".

Danica Roem had a very straightforward message: fix local transportation problems because no one likes to be held back in getting where they need to go.

That debate is likely to get ugly and stupid so here’s a thread.
Firstly, if you’re a #trans or gender diverse person, feel free to look/step away now.

You don’t have to participate in this if it hurts you. Look after yourself, and each other.

How, too, the consequences of their ideological miscegenation have only just begun to work themselves out.
1. Oh, how the project must have seemed like a good idea.

Trans folk getting increasingly uppity!

And what with papers going on about “trans tipping points” and women en masse declaring themselves not feminist any more, let alone second wave, something had to be done.
2. Too, they know in their heart of hearts that they are not that media-friendly, not TV-clubbable. Sure, they get an airing, now and then, on some niche feminist issue ...but, looking back on a transphobic year, those getting a public platform are mostly NOT the ideologues.
