It was ten months after Trump's inauguration, and the entire political world was focused on the Virginia statewide elections because of what it might predict for America's future, and I was focused because of an historic House Delegate race that might predict mine. (thread)
In Virginia's 13th House Delegate District, incumbent Bob Marshall was running for a 14th consecutive term after developing a reputation as one of the most aggressively anti-LGBTQ legislators in the country. His opponent? Former journalist and proud trans woman Danica Roem.
Bob Marshall ran on his abysmal record and called himself Virginia's "chief homophobe".

Danica Roem had a very straightforward message: fix local transportation problems because no one likes to be held back in getting where they need to go.

David Brooks is the kind of "learned man" who asks people from the South why we don't have southern accents. We are caricatures and fables and old movies. We are always white, always straight, always cisgender, and always have a 4th grade education.
We are always right even when we're clearly wrong. We are always children received as precocious even when we're unethical. We are always in need of saving and explaining by the likes of David Brooks. And most of all, we are never truly held accountable.
This is the problem I have with so many coastal commentators who cover "the Heartland": they're willing to excuse white supremacy, misogyny, anti-LGBTQ nonsense, and erase most everyone who is not a white male just so some white guy will tell them they're not really elitist.

I know People on This Website probably want to talk about those awful kids from Kentucky. But because of the text, and the weekend, and the congregation I'm preaching to, I am taking a different angle.
Besides, the situation with those kids is easily enough addressed theologically: hatred is inconsistent with the values of the one who came "that they all may be one," for both "Jews and Greeks."
