I am not surprised by the results here...

There's something here I'll say that won't please everyone on the Right

A dialogue from the 1970 film "Sharafat" that sums up the unease with "humanities" study among conservatives

"Zyada kitabein padne se aadmi nastik ho jata hai"
So there is always this streak of "anti-intellectualism" that will never go away from the religious Right at least.

But having said that, we all know that tribal anti-intellectualism is never too healthy
The challenge is in building a new Right which is not reflexively anti-intellectual, or anti-thought

Good thread on how our reactions to hardship often include both a short term and long term intellectual response - often not in the right proportion
E.g. A kid may be very obese...in my view a "structural" problem

Instead of reforming his lifestyle, he may choose to take some weight loss drugs / diuretics

A short term response to a structural issue
On the other hand, a kid may be suffering from severe flu

A "cyclical problem" but the parents may choose not to medicate him and provide a "structural" solution instead -

Asking him to keep away from cold drinks, curd, polluted air

Which does little to alleviate his distress

The more one listens to Peter Thiel, the more overrated he appears

Hard to follow him in this interview. On one hand he offers a critique of Enlightenment. On the other, he loves the idea of progress

Rather contradictory tendencies

It's perfectly OK to launch a critique of Enlightenment

One can do that with a Burkean conservative lens, where one takes a dim view of human reason and instead favor the inductive wisdom represented by tradition and precedent
But Thiel does not take that line

Instead he believes Enlightenment has weakened our conviction in human reason and in the possibilities of progress

And looks up to Christianity strangely enough to bolster reason and to enable us to get out of the so-called "Great Stagnation"

An interesting quirk of the market in US vis-a-vis India pertains to the working days of Doctors

In India, many doctors work on Sat/Sun - as patients are likely to be free during weekends

However in US, where the onus is on patients to carve out some time during the work-week
When I first encountered this, I found this a tad puzzling

There should be a huge incentive for doctors to work on weekends, as the ones who do will have a competitive advantage over those who don't

Yet few doctors seemed to respond to this incentive
The answer to this conundrum lies in the fact that "doctor appointments" during Mon-Fri, is convenient for patients in US

It is the primary excuse people have to take time off during the week

Most who write about the Chinese economy focus on the number or size of firms under direct government administration — state-owned enterprises (SOEs).

They believe since the percentage of the state sector in the economy has shrunk, China is no longer a planned system.
Strictly speaking, this is true. SOE totals have dropped, as has the share of wholly public firms in the economy. But this doesn't tell the whole story.
