... however I have seen places selling savoury ones with things like lasagna, teriyaki chicken, ham and cheese, potato and cheese, and dozens of other fillings.

I could see this sort of thing catching on outside football grounds or similar in winter. Might take a bit of educating people, but it could catch on. Not sure what the costs would be here, but in Tokyo they sell for about 80p-£1.30 each depending on size/filling. 3/3
Added: here's a better video. Fillings (for the uninitiated) are red bean paste, and white bean paste. But as I say, you could put all sorts of things in them. I am not suggesting for one second that the traditional Japanese ones would fit Western tastes.
