Organizational anthropologist @Linda_A_Hill on how ecosystems, partnerships and leaders successfully innovate in regulated industries: Innovation =novel+useful #ifswoco19 hbr.org/2014/06/collec…
@Linda_A_Hill "You never have too many cooks in the kitchen. Your job as a leader is to get these cooks to cook together."
@Linda_A_Hill "Unleash and harness that team to get what it needs to do. Sometimes they are very top down because that is what's needed. At other times it is bottom up."
@Linda_A_Hill Being a leader means setting direction and get people to follow you into the future. Leading innovation is not like that. It is creating an environment where people can co-create the future with you. People will abrade with you--you listen and advocate for your point of view.
@Linda_A_Hill Innovation is not about planning as much as it is about acting. Stop doing pilots--if it doesn't work, someone was wrong. Do experiments. Use that learning and then it is never a failure.
@Linda_A_Hill Most innovations are about combining ideas. Most orgs go along to get along/consensus. Or one group dominates--bosses or experts. Innovative orgs are more patient and deliberative and inclusive in decision making. But everybody knows who is accountable for decisions.
