Did a search to see if Dems in '98 used the talking point that impeachment is wrong because it would "overturn" an election. The answer is, yes, in fact Rep. Nadler did. But note his distinction between a POTUS lying about sex & a POTUS posing a "dire threat to the Constitution."
Quotes from 12/18/1998 House debate. Note also Nadler's claim that "such an impeachment will produce divisiveness and bitterness in our politics for years to come and will call into question the very legitimacy of our political institutions." The GOP got its wish on that score.
I also find it interesting that Nadler also referred to Clinton's impeachment as a "coup." His point was that the majority of the American people did not support what the GOP was up to. He was right about that.
This is arguably one key difference between the Nixon impeachment process and the Clinton process. The public came to regard Nixon, rightly, as someone who had abused his office. For Clinton, the public came to see that he messed up and lied, but that was not impeachable.
Interestingly, @LindseyGrahamSC argued that Nixon deserved impeachment because he refused to honor subpoenas from Congress and thus declared himself judge and jury. Hmmm, Lindsey is singing a different tune these days it seems.

@LindseyGrahamSC A video clip of Graham making that point about Nixon meriting impeachment for not complying with Congressional subpoenas.
@LindseyGrahamSC A dumb person would read this thread and say "see, both sides today have just used the same arguments the other side made in 1998." But that's not true. Nadler's 1998 argument against impeachment rested upon a) the nature of the President's acts and b) the judgment of the public.
Graham's 1998 argument FOR impeachment describes exactly what the White House is now doing...refusing to cooperate with Congressional impeachment oversight. 1998 Lindsey reveals 2019 Lindsey to be a complete hypocrite.
