Conservatives: The problem w/ America is that no one believes anything any more & people have no respect for authority.
Historians: We care deeply about constitutional democracy, have spent decades studying it, & think Trump has abused his power.
Conservatives: Shut it, libtards!
Historians: Here are some historical examples that suggest that politicians are not acting according to principles they articulated during the last impeachment inquiry.
100 Conservative randos: Oh yeah, well I heard this talking point on Rush/Hannity/Tucker, so shut it libtard!
As I was saying....ad infinitum.
If and when the House holds a procedural vote to begin an impeachment inquiry, 99% of these people using this right wing talking point will defend Trump's refusal to cooperate with the inquiry...because [insert new right wing talking point here].
And as this detailed thread by a historian shows, things have changed since 1974 and 1998 that go some way toward explaining why a full house vote was more necessary in those years than it is now. I still think they should hold a vote...but yeah...history.
Ad infinitum...
FWIW, here's a thread from today where I reflected a bit further about the sorts of responses I got ad infinitum.
