New: Trump’s former national security adviser HR McMaster calls Trump’s decision to withdraw US troops from northern Syria “unfortunate.” He says US troop presence in northern Syria was “immensely helpful to US security and US interests”
McMaster, speaking at @FDD event, points out northern Syria is where nearly 70% of Syria’s oil reserves are, that Assad & Putin are eyeing. “once you cede control there, you cede influence over what does a post-civil war Syria look like”
He also warns that the current situation risks full Turkish-Kurdish conflict. On the deteriorating US-Turkey relationship and current situation, McMaster says:
“It’s been a sad couple days, and it’s going to get sadder”
McMaster asked whether it’s appropriate for Trump to seek foreign assistance for help in an election.
McMaster: “of course no, it’s absolutely not” and what has to happen now is see how our democratic system plays out to “make a judgment as to whether or not that happened”
