In a capital abundant environment, capital efficiency was not heavily selected for.

But tech has several orders of magnitude to plumb in terms of capital efficiency. Remote work, automation/AI/robotics, and the incredible productivity gains from the last generation of SaaS.
In the last generation, Instagram, WhatsApp, Minecraft, and of course Bitcoin itself all got to $1B+ with a very headcount light model.

And those were all founded in 2009/2010.

We haven’t even begun to fight in terms of capital efficiency.
It’s similar to optimizing a program for resource utilization. So long as RAM, hard drive space, etc are abundant then you optimize for developer experience.

But in resource constrained environments (mobile, smart contracts, embedded) you embrace the problem.

The concept of social media as the Fifth Estate may be the most enduring part of Zuck's speech yesterday.

As the Fourth Estate, the press self-conceptualizes its role as holding society accountable.

As the Fifth Estate, social media is how society holds the press accountable.
In a sense this is how things already work, though it’s usually characterized negatively.

Journalists publish & social media provides immediate accountability. It’s the comments section that can’t be shut down, the critic that can’t be shut up.

Unless you censor social media…
The issue is bigger than Facebook, as big as it is. It extends to every platform that provides people a voice.

Should tech companies accede to demands from their direct competitors (namely media companies) to censor millions of users?

Or should they stand for free speech?

Zuck’s speech was good and necessary as a statement of principles.

Tech has bent too far in the direction of the heckler’s veto over the last few years.

It will take time, but the pendulum is now swinging back.
It is inconsistent to claim both that:

1) Facebook is so powerful that it must be broken up
2) Facebook is “just” a private company so it should censor at will

No. When you have two billion people on your platform, you need to think about the spirit of the law too.

Video games are so much harder to code than enterprise web apps. This is counterintuitive for people new to software.

It’s kind of like comedy being more difficult than drama. Fun and games is often technically harder than the serious stuff.
Video games are hard because they push the limits of hardware, require real-time responsiveness, and cater to a fickle audience.

Enterprise web apps aren’t as hard technologically. The difficulty is in domain knowledge, sales, and a thousand details of execution.
Comedy is reportedly harder to film than drama because comedy is all about timing, while drama works within a broad range. quora.com/What-is-more-d…
