I want to tell you about a weird rare book, the crazy things in it, and why Scientology is terrified of it. "All About Radiation" is by "A Nuclear Physicist and a Medical Doctor". Who's this nuclear physicist? It's none other than L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology. 1/9
Early versions of the dust jacket describe LRH as one of America's first nuclear physicists. In reality, LRH took a single physics class in college, which he failed, and dropped out soon after. Later printings stopped calling him a nuclear physicist. 2/9
In Scientology, LRH is believed to be a source of ultimate truth. This becomes problematic when your source of ultimate truth publishes works with demonstrably wrong science in them. For example, here he writes that fission powers the sun, when it's actually fusion. 3/9
But the most shocking parts of this book are the sections that explain how ionizing radiation is more of a mental problem than a physical problem. 4/9
Hubbard came to this conclusion by experimenting, apparently. This implies they irradiated some poor Scientologists to see what would happen... 5/9
LRH also delves into drug design in this book, with a formula for a drug he calls Dianazene. Vitamins are apparently all you need to treat radiation sickness. Although it has some extremely gnarly side effects, like temporarily giving you cancer. 6/9
In 1958, the FDA siezed 21,000 Dianazene tablets that the Church of Scientology was manufacturing because of their false treatment claims. You can still buy Dianazene today on sketchy vitamin websites. 7/9
The reason Scientology hates this book is because it contains information they know to be wrong. The problem is, they also believe everything LRH wrote is true and immutable. Despite this, later prints of this book have some sections deleted. 8/9
Scientology has quietly stopped promoting, printing, and teaching from this book. This behavior is part of the reason a new sect of Scientology broke off, called Free Zone, but that's a story for another day. 9/9
