Look, I believe our current prison system needs to go, and I don't believe in punishment for its own sake, but "restorative justice!!!" is a horrifying answer to "how do we keep rape victims safe from rapists and Muslims/Jews/POC safe from mosque/synagogue/Black church shooters?"
Like, "because they committed a violent crime and have expressed/demonstrated desire to commit more" is the only reason I believe is legitimate to lock someone up, but I do, yes, value the right of victims to not have to live their lives in fear over the autonomy of perpetrator.
And restorative justice?

Needs to be VOLUNTARY on the part of victims. You can't make it default.

You fucking cannot *require* rape victims to attempt to reconcile with and heal their rapist. Like, wtf is WRONG with an apparently significant portion of prison abolitionists?
All this is telling me is you're willing to sacrifice the lives of a lot of victims in order to heal violent perpetrators, which I can only describe as a malicious ethical system.
And although I can't say I'm happy to know it, I have to thank @yumcoconutmilk for a couple threads that showed how vague or outright cruel the majority of the answers prison abolition advocates give when asked what we should do to protect victims from retaliation/further abuse.
@yumcoconutmilk And yes, I'm 100% aware that people who have committed rape/murder/physically violent domestic abuse are the vast minority of the incarcerated.

But any proposal to abolish prisons still has to address how to keep their victims safe if they're not confined.
