While it’s great when unions smash Tory ballot thresholds, they’re hurdles we shouldn’t have to jump. We should demand the abolition of all anti-union laws and a new positive charter of rights, so that all that’s necessary for workers to strike is a vote in a workplace meeting.
Just as a reminder, here’s what workers currently have to do in order to legally strike. This is actually a simplified version: there are often additional hurdles.
And here’s what most bosses have to do if they want to make some kind of change in the workplace. Obviously we can peg back their unilateralism via collective bargaining agreements, etc., but across a lot of the economy, employers have more or less total power.
Democracy effectively stops at the doors of the workplace. The CWU, as the only major union to retain any significant culture of taking wildcat action, is exceptional in having mounted a challenge to this. On the whole, most workplaces are dictatorships where the boss rules.
The way to fix that isn’t via worker participation in company boards or similar schemes, which will invariably be coopted by the bosses and turned into partnership mechanisms, but by a Labour government abolishing all anti-union laws and legislating for a full right to strike.
