One follow up to this piece: there's no indication Erdogan is interested in Donald's kind of dealing. His philosophy that you can always craft a win out of optics by letting all sides say they won falls apart when the other side wants actual things.

The gulf between Trump's attempt for a PR victory that lets him claim "peace with honor" and Erdogan's pursuit of real advances is cast in stark relief by this statement released by Speaker Pelosi.

Karl Rove and others have derided Democrats, liberals, and progressives as being members of the "reality-based community" with the implication that we lack the will to power necessary to ignore what *is* and create our own reality.

Trump is hitting the limits of stark denial.

Getting ready to go to Capclave and I'm like... why did it take me this long to try a con I don't have to fly to? This whole deal is so much more chill.
This Capclave thing is more chill because I know someone driving that direction this morning anyway. But, like, I could get a rideshare to basically anywhere in state for less than a plane ticket to most conventions I'd go to.
And for less than that I could get a rideshare to somewhere on the metro or another transit line.

Money would still be a thing because room and board but when I fly to a convention airfare is a huge part of the cost.

See when I tell you all that David Brooks missed his calling this is the kind of thing I'm talking about.
David Brooks is supposed to be a middle of the road high fantasy author, one of the many mediocre Davids of sf&f. I'm not saying that Dr. Beckett leaping into his body and publishing A Storm of Soppressatta and Capicola would fix our timeline, but it would set some things right
The man who can write the words "Insensitively, I led her into a gourmet sandwich shop." was not born to write about life on this world or any other that has ever existed. He is heart is on the otherwhere. He was meant to chronicle the things that never were and never could be.

He's... he's not wrong here? He doesn't refer to a relationship, he refers to a shared heritage. Greek democracy, Roman republicanism. The idea that we inherited of a mantle of European civilization that runs through Rome is of course also a big white supremacist talking point.
The point he's making is debatable but as a matter of perspective rather than facts. It's not him getting dates or numbers wrong, it was written for him. Probably by Miller or at his instigation.

If it sounds like nonsense, you're not in the intended audience. They got it fine.
I am not going to argue with everyone dunking on him because as always I am not an unpaid PR flack for fascists.

But it's worth understanding and recognizing fascist talking points. Invoking the heritage of Rome sends a signal.

In a phone call, Russian president Putin urges Turkish president Erdogan to “assess the situation carefully” so that the Turkish operation does not hurt “peace efforts” in Syria (the Astana process).
The Turkish invasion, dubbed “Spring of Peace”, will likely be in stages over several months.

Probably a play on the word for one of the two towns, with large Arab population, that the operation might start with — Ras al-Ayn (Serê Kaniyê).
