Something surprising is happening in Georgia in advance of the 2020 elections: counties are adding precincts. Pooler, a rapidly growing Chatham city which saw four-hour lines last year, will receive two new precincts before March.
Heavily white (but slowly diversifying) Forsyth County is adding 5 voting locations, a 33% increase. It currently has 16 precincts and 15 voting locations.
Clarkston, a DeKalb city known for its diversity and large refugee population, will go from one precinct to two.
Columbia County, in Augusta's suburbs, is adding two precincts in Harlem (which is fairly white, despite the name), although two precincts elsewhere in the county are being combined. Note that these precincts are not exclusive to that city, in contrast to Pooler and Clarkston.
Heavily white Jeff Davis County (yes, it's named for Jefferson Davis) has reinstated a precinct in a majority-black area of Hazlehurst for municipal voting this year, but I am unsure how, if at all, this affects precincts for state elections.
This is by no means a universal trend. Oconee County, south of Athens, consolidated two of its precincts to save money on city elections because Watkinsville was split between them, even though many voters outside of the city use those precincts in even years.
And Randolph County, which made national news last year when the Board of Elections considered eliminating most of its precincts, eliminated two precincts. Both were heavily white and low in population.
I believe Candler County is combining its two precincts into one, but they already share a voting location, so I have no idea what effect (if any) that has for voters. I do know it will make the county's election data less detailed.
I hope they're saving a lot of money and putting that money to good use with this decision, because as far as I can tell it has literally no upside.
