“They suspected a [traumatic brain injury], but when they prescribed her liberal doses of opiates, she lost control of her life. She would be in and out of rehab — and jail — for the next 14 years.”
I knew many cases started with a prescription, but not the magnitude.

This source states 65-75% (!) of heroin addictions now start with prescription opioids.

This source quotes a similar figure.

In theory these could be stolen prescription drugs. It would be insane if ~80% of heroin addictions actually originated in a doctor’s office.

I couldn’t find a clear stat on the percentage of addictions that started under the care of a doctor.

But if it’s even in double digits, let alone 80%, that takes the idea of iatrogenic (aka healthcare-system-caused) illness to another level.
