If the House of Commons passes the Government motion without the Letwin amendment it will be committing itself (on pain of no deal) to vote through in record time a complex constitutional Bill which is currently locked in a Whitehall drawer.
No MP outside a narrow circle of Ministers knows what is in it. They can have no idea whether they would want to vote for it or not, or what the Government will do if it doesn’t like amendments made to it.
MPs should remember the old Church of Scotland sermon about those who sinned because they did not know what would happen after death. "There will be people cast into the pits of Hell, crying 'oh, Lord, we didna ken!' And the Lord will reply, 'well, ye ken noo!'".
