Happening soon! Learn about addressing inequity w/ Drs. @AishaLangford, Negin Hajizadeh, & @BruceSchackman. Moderated by Drs. @angiefagerlin & Brownsyne Tucker Edmonds #SMDM19 ow.ly/yCT450wGWPV
@AishaLangford @BruceSchackman @angiefagerlin If you're hungry for food and knowledge about inequity, join us in the Oregon room on the 1st floor #SMDM19
@AishaLangford @BruceSchackman @angiefagerlin Here's our panel! The panel will be followed by small group discussions later tonight. Join us any time! #SMDM19
@AishaLangford @BruceSchackman @angiefagerlin @aishalangford has a soapbox: (1) make sure you are actually asking racial and ethnic minority research participants to participate in your study! Don't just assume they won't be part of research!
@AishaLangford @BruceSchackman @angiefagerlin (2) pay attention to your protocol. Keep in mind where you're recruiting from. Partner with institutions and think about recruitment early in the process before recruiting minorities becomes an emergency. Go beyond the academic clinic
@AishaLangford @BruceSchackman @angiefagerlin (3) COMPENSATE PEOPLE FAIRLY. In both money and with your time. Great idea to give lectures to the community about career options. That costs you nothing but your time.
@AishaLangford @BruceSchackman @angiefagerlin (4) have flexible research visits. Everyone can't come to your offices between 9 and 5.
@AishaLangford @BruceSchackman @angiefagerlin (5) thank people for their time and give them an update about how their data were used #smdm19
@AishaLangford @BruceSchackman @angiefagerlin Next: Negin Hajizadeh speaks about her work with Hispanic populations, working with populations of which you are not a part and authentic engagement. It took at least a year to gain trust with the Queens Hispanic community. #SMDM19
@AishaLangford @BruceSchackman @angiefagerlin The Hispanic culture is not just one culture. And we need to go beyond translating materials. #SMDM19
@AishaLangford @BruceSchackman @angiefagerlin Consider your participant's caregiving needs. It can be difficult to pay for childcare from a liability standpoint, but you can provide activities for kids. #SMDM19
@AishaLangford @BruceSchackman @angiefagerlin Now @BruceSchackman is up! What is he doing on this panel? Well, diversity goes beyond gender and race/ethnicity... #SMDM19
@AishaLangford @BruceSchackman @angiefagerlin What is a sexual and gender minority person? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_mi… Sexual orientation and sexual identity are different things. These groups are at higher risk for many health conditions (HIV/AIDS, sexual violence, mental health) #SMDM19
@AishaLangford @BruceSchackman @angiefagerlin @NIH has excellent resources for funding research in this area, including some supplements dpcpsi.nih.gov/sgmro #SMDM19
@AishaLangford @BruceSchackman @angiefagerlin @NIH Last, but not least, Brownsyne Tucker Edmonds speaks about the development of faculty of color from an institutional perspective. She talks about "solo challenges" for faculty of color: managing as the only one of your identity in your center, department, institutions #SMDM19
@AishaLangford @BruceSchackman @angiefagerlin @NIH First: the struggle to find time for research given the diversity demands (minority tax)-- diversity dinners, committees, advising. we all have the challenge of saying no but minority faculty have more requests and have to say more no's #SMDM19
@AishaLangford @BruceSchackman @angiefagerlin @NIH Non-minority colleagues are not asked, expected, or needed to do these tasks. Next, emotional exhaustion in classroom dynamics... #SMDM19
@AishaLangford @BruceSchackman @angiefagerlin @NIH Example: a student sees a professor of color and that doesn't jive with their mental model. People question the authority of faculty of color. #SMDM19
@AishaLangford @BruceSchackman @angiefagerlin @NIH This constant need to prove you do belong has a grating effect on people and causes them to overperform in areas that aren't important #SMDM19
@AishaLangford @BruceSchackman @angiefagerlin @NIH Next: visibility and invisibility. People notice when faculty of color aren't there. And when they are there, their ideas and contributions are co-opted by others #SMDM19
@AishaLangford @BruceSchackman @angiefagerlin @NIH Finally, mentorship may be ok but sponsorship is often less good for faculty of color. There are real costs to all of these dynamics #SMDM19
@AishaLangford @BruceSchackman @angiefagerlin @NIH . @btuckeredmonds is working on a number of programs to improve the climate and support for faculty of color at her own institutions #SMDM19

(apologies for leaving @btuckeredmonds handle off this thread!)
