Most of what we call culture is human-made. No meteor landed with some scrolls to be obeyed.
I'm fact, there're heavy cultural disparities in the pre and post 1900 Igbo land.
The Umuada is a group of...
Historically, the Umuada are venerated because they represent the most sacred god the Igbo - the Ala(Earth)! Because from the wombs come life,so does 'life' come from Ala or Ani.
They hold a spiritual, ethical & social-political office.
It is said that they put out one King and his entire lineage out from the throne because he was fond of confiscating lands from the poor.
They cursed/punished men..
They built markets, controlled trade, made political rules, sat on governing councils, handled rituals and cleansing of the land.
These women were the balance between sense and nonsense.
But...
On Funerals--Nwanyi Isi Ikpe (widowhood)
The burial arrangements/cutting of widows' hair, bathing of husbands' corpses and forcing them to drink the water(old practices in some places) were all 'spiritual' practices.
At least we hear how some..
To prove innocense, they made them drink. Some widows might have died from bacteria contamination from the water, and we're claimed to have been struck by the gods
I read some texts on Igbo cosmotology where some would think a god was on a mountain..
On Urbanisation...
These semi literate/illiterate women who still dictate these practices will continue to do so ignorantly if we the Millinials don't join those groups and take over the reins of leadership..
Turn the group to a political force. Pool resources to build science/tech hubs in the villages, sell our model of Feminism to the world--
Not the silly/stone age burial rites
