accept such a motion from anyone but leader of official opposition. But this is the least conventional government in modern times. So maybe that will be the route. I understand SNP considering such a move. Since the SNP and Tories - and maybe the LibDems - all agree...

Speaker election 1st round. Bryant 98 Harman 72 Hillier 10 Hoyle 211 Laing 113 Leigh 12 Winterton 46 So Hillier and Leigh knocked out. Round two. #speakerelection
Hoyle still 70 votes away from the 50% of 562 votes cast, but way out in front. Bryant did better than some expected. All about second preferences now. This could be a long night
PS we are waiting ten minutes to find out if anyone else will drop out before 2nd round of voting

(1) I wonder if American audiences fully grasp the enormity of what #BorisJohnson has done by asking the Queen to suspend #Parliament. This is way more extreme than if #Trump asked #MitchMcConnell to delay the Senate session to avoid an unpopular vote. cnn.com/europe/live-ne…
(2) To put this #ConstitutionalCrisis in perspective, you have to remember that the #UK's parliamentary supremacy vests far more power in their legislature than we've ever given to ours. Under the American system, the Constitution is supreme. Under the UK system, Parliament is.
(3) Things have gotten trickier in recent years as #Parliament delegated some power to other institutions: regional assemblies in #Scotland and #NorthernIreland, a Supreme Court (Lords use to be the highest court), and made other structural changes. see: talkingpoliticspodcast.com/blog/2019/168-…

I'm trying to count the ways it's going to go wrong when the Tories get their new leader.
They got elected promising something they can't do.
They promise something to the Conservative party, the country doesn't get a say in it, and it immediately fails anyway.
I can't see they can do anything but resign or call a general election.
You can't become prime minister on a new policy that the country didn't vote for, and then as soon as that goes wrong pull something new out your arse and carry on like you own it.
