Twenty-nine senators and their spouses own between $3.5 million and $13.9 million worth of stock in companies that extract, transport, or burn fossil fuels, or provide services to fossil fuel companies, according to a Sludge analysis of personal financial filings as of Aug. 16.
The senators are invested in 86 fossil fuel companies, including well-known giants like ExxonMobil and Royal Dutch Shell, but also a range of lesser known companies that specialize in pipeline operations, natural gas exports, and oilfield services.

1. The GOP is sick & depraved, at every level: a short story.

So, in Ohio, GOP legislators are pushing a bill that would provide millions in new subsidies for uneconomical nuclear plants, while scrapping the state's renewable-energy mandates & energy-efficiency programs.
2. Why would you push such a perverse bill? Well, they're Republicans, so they don't care about climate change, hate renewable energy, & oppose policies that help the poor. But ... they're OHIO Republicans, so they love FirstEnergy, the owner of the nuke plants in question.
3. Put aside the rest of it, though: why would you scrap utility energy-efficiency programs, which permanently lower the energy bills of low-income ratepayers & pay themselves back tenfold? It's win-win-win policy. Why on earth would you try to kill them?

1. There's an extremely important climate-policy story going on in the Senate right now & it's not getting enough attention. Everyone's focused on the House & the Green New Deal, but the Senate is where dreams go to die, especially if this goes the wrong way.
2. Long story short: it looks like Sen. Joe Manchin (WV) may become the ranking member of the Energy & Natural Resources Committee. If that happens, he'd become chair of the cmte when/if Dems take the Senate in 2020. That would be a DISASTER for climate policy.
3. I can't think of a single thing Senate Dems could do more likely to crush the bright new climate ambition in the House than having Manchin as chair of ENR. ENR is likely where climate legislation will happen in the Senate & the chair is the one who writes legislation.
