Chile is a highly unequal country. But in recent years, inequality in Chile has fallen significantly (as it has in most Latin American countries).
And even as inequality has fallen, incomes have grown. Since 1990, Chile's growth has considerably outpaced that of the United States.
Chile's life expectancy has risen steadily, overtaking that of neighboring Argentina. Chileans, on average, now live longer than Americans do.
Freedom House rates Chile as being significantly more free than the United States. Chile gets a rating of 94/100, compared to 86/100 for the U.S.

Reporters Without Borders ranks Chile 45th in terms of press freedom. The United States is 48th.

In terms of wealth, Chile is actually LESS unequal than the United States (measured by wealth Gini coeffcients).

In addition to outgrowing the United States, Chile since 1990 (when it got rid of its fascist government) has consistently outgrown Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico - all while reducing inequality.
In conclusion, despite a high level of income inequality, Chile since the end of fascist rule looks like a huge success story - growing incomes, falling inequality, improving health, and a free society.

Poor American kids whose parents were born in India or China tend to make it into the upper middle class.
In general, mobility tends to be higher for Americans whose parents are from Asia, the Middle East, South Europe, and South America, and lower for those with parents from the Caribbean, Central America, and West Europe.
My bet is that this pattern is mostly due to selection effects - what type of poor people immigrate to America from each country - rather than to deep cultural differences.

Once again, the global-poverty-reduction denialists are feeding you bad, wrong ideas, and you should ignore them.

Data shows interesting trends - Argentina scores relatively low on independent judiciary, but strong in democracy and civil society. Mexico also strong in latter category. Venezuela miserable across the board

brazil has run-off voting & bolsonaro (whom i'll refer to as the fascist) did not reach 51%,so not ALL hope is lost. between the 1st round of the general election on sunday (which also was for senate, house, and governor) and the 2nd round, candidates have 3 weeks to campaign.+
the remaining candidates for the 2nd round of the presidential election are the fascist (whose problems i have gone into ad nauseum on this site & written about elsewhere and you can go searching for later) and fernando haddad, who represents PT (workers' party)+

On Sept. 11, 2001, everyone watched in horror as our country was attacked. Here is a story about a friend who died on 9/11 as an #American hero. I first met John years ago, we had both trained and worked in the business of corporate finance out of #NYC. John was a good man.
After working his way through the difficult first years many new executives face as they battle to make a career for themselves on Wall Street, John had worked at several firms with positions of increasing responsibility. It was difficult for him, because John was a nice guy.
By 2000, John had won enough battles to earn respect on Wall Street. He had become Managing Director of boutique investment firm Sandler O'Neill, focused on mergers & acquisitions of regional banks. John worked from his office on the 104th floor of One World Trade Center in #NYC.
