At a press conference today on @NYCSpeakerCoJo street master plan bill, @MKramerTV of @CBSNewYork continued to parrot misinformation about cars, including calling Washington Heights a "transit desert" where residents "need" cars. Let's examine that (a thread).
First of all, @MKramerTV, is this what a "transit desert" looks like?
Next, check the Census for Washington Heights (pictured left). In that zone, only 7.3 percent of residents drive to work alone and 68 percent use public transit (pictured right). More people WALK than drive in Washington Heights, @MKramerTV
Also from the census, only 24.7 percent of households in Washington Heights even have access to a car. Yet virtually every inch of public roadway is currently reserved for the movement and storage of automobiles that 75 percent of the neighborhood don't even have.
Under the leadership of news director @friendwcbswlny, @CBSNewYork peddles lies to suggest that New Yorkers "need" cars because @MKramerTV and her colleagues work at a station and for a media that is largely supported by car advertisers. #climatecriminals
@CoreyinNYC did a good job pushing back on the lies, but most politicians, including @NYCMayor, fail to do so out of some weird respect for a veteran reporter and her incessant pro-car message. Let's keep pushing back, @BrooklynSpoke @TransAlt @RidersNY @CarlinaRivera @ydanis
