The fact that Joe Biden is counting on strong support from black voters is widely known. Less understood is the similar bet that Sanders is making on Latino voters: His campaign believes driving up turnout among Latinos and expanding the community’s electorate is critical to win.
Sanders is one of the few 2020 contenders who's spent substantial time with Latinos in Iowa, according to Latino operatives and leaders in the state. He has gone to Lotería game nights put on by LULAC and was the only top candidate who appeared at the group’s presidential forum.
There’s also the reality that Sanders likely can’t win the primary w/o Latinos, since his team is relying on a strong finish in states such as Nevada and California. “They’re enormously important,” Sanders said. “We are doing everything we can in a variety of ways to organize.”
