I was having a nice chat with my Mom about why I was excited to come to @MemorialU (remember, my Mom is also a professor of political science and government). One thing I am not sure people realize and I explained to her was the caliber of scholars @MemorialU has recruited.

I am obviously well aware of just how strong @MUNGeog and @MemorialPoliSci are because I work at the intersection of political science and human geography, but they have also amazing people in sociology like @liamswiss and @mcjs13 - so, no, it's not surprising I'm visiting :)

Again, for those who believe I love travelling:

I HATE TRAVELLING.

I love doing the things I'm supposed to be doing while travelling, but the actual act of packing, taking a plane, or a bus, having to sit for hours, adapting to jet lag/new environmental conditions?

HATE IT.
I am learning to be generous with my body and myself and add a couple of days (usually weekend) to adapt to my new environment as I travel. Because no matter what, I'm my first (and sometimes only) and most important advocate. I have to take care of myself, at all points.
I travel a lot for work, not because "I love it". I have important commitments and I do them not only willingly but also happily. Distances are the issue, obviously. It'd be great if I could be just "ENERGIZE" and be vaporized into a different location for every trip I make.

One thing I'm *pretty* sure people get wrong* is that Democrats disadvantage in districting/gerrymandering does not come from cities being denser than rural areas per se. 1/3

* I've thought about this a lot but am still not 100% sure my intuition is right.
Rather, it's that the bluest contiguous areas (which happen to be urban and dense) are bluer than the reddest contiguous areas (which happen to be rural) are red. 2/3
In a hypothetical world where certain rural areas were *extremely red* (e.g. 80%+ GOP voting), as red as some urban cores are blue (e.g. 80%+ DEM voting), the GOP would have more problems with districting and could more easily be gerrymandered. 3/3

Interesting results from the Danish elections #fv19 As expected Danish People's Party (hard right ) collapsed. Some appears to have gone to three new parties (on harder right still), some to conseravtives and some to the social democrats, who have v much moved onto DPP's turf...
Quite disappointing for social democrats who had hoped to do better, not least after compromising so much on DPP agenda. Still thanks to green gains they will go into government..
In terms of dealing with far right, internalising their agenda has been quite effective. But then, they've just popped up somewhere in another form, elsewhere, even further to the right than the DPP were...

I'm fairly sure some of us have been telling political parties for a very LONG time that ultimately climate change only serves to signal to voters the very worst of a remote, aloof, self-regarding political establishment (and their cronies)...
They said that we said it because we're nasty people.

But look at the facts...
Climate policies have not served as a successful political wedge in the Anglosphere - the US and Australia, the same is looming for Canada. It hasn't been a wedge issue in the UK, where there has been a cross-party consensus at the voter's expense.

Having finished The Authoritarians, it's time to start a new thread of #IanLivetweetsHisResearch. Today I am finally getting past the introduction of How Propaganda Works by Jason Stanley.
Having slogged through some proper academic writing in my day, Stanley's writing is blessedly accessible. But after Altemeyer's light tone and constant dad jokes, Stanley's reads as pretty dry.
So far the introduction is full of a lot of quotations about the nature of democracy, from Victor Klemperer to Elizabeth Anderson to Plato. OF COURSE Plato.
