/ So, today was a big day for @DrJRMarcelin and I. We've been developing curricula on "Structural Challenges & Inequities in Healthcare Delivery" for the @UNMCCOM M1 students as part of the Health Systems Science coil.

Thread on this #MedEd project + today's capstone 👇🏾
/ With inspiration from @JonathanMetzl & Dr. Helena Hanson's work on #StructuralCompetency, we wanted to assemble a pilot set of experiences that would give @UNMC students a glimpse into local health inequities, from historical & community perspectives:
/ We gave the M1s several introductory lectures & assignments focused on big-picture issues like #SDoH & disparities, creating a "structural DDx" for patients, unconscious #bias & #microaggressions, developing structural humility, and #racism in medicine...
/ ..but today was what we were most excited about. We took all ~135 M1s out of the classroom and spent the day at @seventy5north's Highlander development in North Omaha, where students engaged w/community change agents in housing, education, policy, health outreach & more.
/ We heard from @seventy5north President & CEO Othello Meadows about the @PurposeBuiltCS model, and how his organization's transformative work aims to uplift the North Omaha & Highlander communities across multiple domains: highlanderomaha.com

/ @KCaverzagie gave a great #HealthSystemsScience lecture emphasizing key concepts in #populationhealth & the role of physicians in improving the health outcomes of individuals by recognizing the context of their community.
/ However, our biggest goal was that students heard lived experiences of our community members & had close conversations about issues that matter to THEM. Our students formed new relationships, and our community partners shared their stories with the future docs of Nebraska.
/ More photos from the tabletop discussions:
/ We hope every @UNMC student makes fighting health inequity in their community part of their professional mission -- but we recognize there is always more work to be done in educating ourselves on these issues! We all start somewhere -- this curriculum is just the beginning.
/ Lastly, we have too many people to be grateful for who helped make this happen, including many others not on Twitter.
