According to Newton's laws, when objects rotate around a common centre, the ones furthest from the centre move more slowly than those near it. Otherwise, the furthest objects would fly off into space.

Rubin's observations of stars in galaxies didn't match this. Either there is mass that we can't see or gravity behaves differently than we presently know. #DarkMatter is now widely accepted in the scientific community thanks to the work of Vera Rubin.

1) if you believed in Newton's laws about gravity
2) and you trusted your data
--> there had to be some "hidden", "dark matter" to explain the data. 2/

The astronomer Vera Rubin was born #OTD in 1928. Her work on galactic rotation curves became one of the main pieces of evidence for the existence of dark matter, and she deserved a Nobel Prize for it.

The first case for dark matter was made by Fritz Zwicky in the 1930s. His observations of galaxies in the Coma Cluster suggested there simply wasn't enough luminous matter present to gravitationally hold everything together. Hence, there must be matter there that you can't see.

@NewLeibniz A working Dark Matter theory is more than just speculating the existence of a hypothetical particle. You also have to answer the question: How is it produced?
@NewLeibniz This production mechanism needs to be specific, and to give the correct abundance of the particle in the universe, matching the indirect evidence from e.g. galactic rotation curves, galaxy clusters, etc.

The whole dark matter search community reminds me of Daffy Duck in the episode quoted from IMDb here. [shockingly, I do not instantly find a gif of Daffy falling off said cliff.]
Reading this article does not inspire confidence. Sounds more like they’re poised to make the same mistakes all over again. Having spent decades in a fruitless search for WIMPs motivated by the WIMP miracle - an irrelevant numerical coincidence - might they decide to learn more?

On Sept. 11, 2001, everyone watched in horror as our country was attacked. Here is a story about a friend who died on 9/11 as an #American hero. I first met John years ago, we had both trained and worked in the business of corporate finance out of #NYC. John was a good man.
After working his way through the difficult first years many new executives face as they battle to make a career for themselves on Wall Street, John had worked at several firms with positions of increasing responsibility. It was difficult for him, because John was a nice guy.
By 2000, John had won enough battles to earn respect on Wall Street. He had become Managing Director of boutique investment firm Sandler O'Neill, focused on mergers & acquisitions of regional banks. John worked from his office on the 104th floor of One World Trade Center in #NYC.

Who discovered dark matter in galaxies? Here’s a thread based on our “A history of dark matter” (see arxiv.org/abs/1605.04909 for details and all references)
In the 1960s radio astronomers measured the rotation curve of the Andromeda galaxy, out to a relatively large radius. See the data obtained by Mort Roberts in 1966
In 1970 Vera Rubin and Kent Ford obtained optical data of M31 out to 110 arcminutes away from the galaxy’s center, and found rotational velocities compatible with radio measurements
