One of the many awesome things about Halloween in Japan is the annual "Mundane Halloween" costume contest sponsored by website @dailyportalz

160 years ago to the day, Joshua Abraham Norton, a recently bankrupted businessman in San Francisco, declared himself "Norton I, Emperor of these United States" 1/
Born in England, raised in South Africa, the future Emperor Norton sailed to San Francisco in 1849. Through commodities trading and real estate speculation, he turned a $40K inheritance into a massive fortune. By 1852, he was one of the richest, most respected men in the city. 2/
However, Norton lost his whole fortune on an ill-fated attempt to corner the market on rice in San Francisco, and was left literally penniless and living in a flophouse by 1858. 3/

I bought a copy of Hasbro's mean-spirited and woefully ill-informed "MONOPOLY: SOCIALISM" board game so you don't have to - a thread 1/
From the tagline "Winning is for capitalists" we can see right away that this game is not going to be friendly to whatever it deems "socialism" to be.

Because as we all know "socialists" never play sports or participate in any sort of competitive activity, like board games. 2/
Interestingly, the design of the game features the red socialist rose... do ordinary people who presumably hate "socialism" really know what this symbol even is? 3/

On this date - May 13, 1985 - Philadelphia Police dropped a bomb from a helicopter on a home owned by radical black nationalist group MOVE, destroying the house, killing 5 adults and 6 children, and causing a fire that burned down 61 black middle class homes. 1/
Prior to dropping the bomb, over 500 police officers fired more than 10,000 rounds into a house known to contain women and children. Finally, police commissioner Gregore J. Sambor ordered the dropping of the bomb, which had been "loaned" to the police by the FBI. 2/
The ensuing fire burned down a fairly well-off black neighborhood in West Philly, leaving 250 people homeless. 3/

Firstly, you might be aware of this, but in our garden we have two chickens. They live in a little chicken house. Their names are Lines & Puffball. These was chosen by Friday Fledglings, our under 5s group, who we should entrust with more infrastructure decisions than we do.
We have a group that tends to the chickens — a complex machine of many moving parts, that keep the chickens chicking over.

It’s kind of therapeutic, like an SAD light.

Life gets busy. Emails overflow. The soul blocks, spluttering like an old pipe.

One of the many great things about Pi is that it's algorithmically compressible. You can express the idea of Pi using far fewer characters than are actually contained in its numerical expression (which would be an infinite number). #PiDay 1/
Between 0 and 10 (say), there are an infinite number of rational numbers: those expressible as p/q, where both p and q are integers. The rationals are "dense" - given any number between 0 and 10, there is a rational number arbitrarily close to it. 2/
But there are infinitely more irrational numbers, those that can't be expressed as p/q. It's a bigger infinity than the number of rationals. The rationals are "countable," the irrationals are "uncountable." There are a lot of irrational numbers out there. 3/

If you've ever wondered about the (sort of Christian) background/history of #Halloween:

Halloween’s origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in), when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.
The Celts believed the night before the New Year (which they celebrated on Nov 1) the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. Druids built huge sacred bonfires, where people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities.
During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes (typically animal heads and skins) to ward off roaming ghosts. It was also a night of fortune-telling. By the 9th century Christianity had spread into Celtic lands.

One of the many disheartening things about the media/social media/real life response to recent #metoo stuff is quite how many people think that anything short of conviction of an alleged sex offender means alleged victims lied. Wee crime corr thread. 1/
2/ I know internet partisans like their world to be oh-so-simple and black and white, goodies and baddies. But I guess most of us know the real world is not like that? There can be a lot of gray out there.
3/ There is a whole range of behaviours which fall under sexual misconduct or offending. Sometimes these fall below a test under which they might be suitable for criminal court proceedings. That does not mean either alleged victims - or perpetrators - have "lied".

The midichlorians are an example of my overarching argument about The Prequels: that they contain a very nuanced story told very, very incompetently.
The Jedi are SUPPOSED to be spiritually enlightened warrior monks. That's what our image of them is. It's what Luke thought they were. It's what Anakin expected them to be.
