Hoyle in commanding position...supsect we'll see quite a few drop outs. Strong performance from Bryant and weak for Harman.
On the basis of 562 electors a candidate would need 281 to win ouright. Hoyle isn't that far away...
No other candidates dropping out. That complicates matters. There's only 22 votes to be redistributed. Not going to see much change for the second round...

@joswinson Lots of countries have multi-party debates, sometimes accompanied by a head to head of the leaders of the blocs (ie those likely to be PM). Perhaps this shows why, as @skynews has been calling for all year, we should have an independent commission to set them up...

Brexit Party gathering in central London (again). But this time, the room is filled with 450 Prospective Parliamentary Candidates, first speeches from the leadership, then a training session. Doesn’t feel like a party on the verge of standing aside...

Speaker election 1st round. Bryant 98 Harman 72 Hillier 10 Hoyle 211 Laing 113 Leigh 12 Winterton 46 So Hillier and Leigh knocked out. Round two. #speakerelection
Hoyle still 70 votes away from the 50% of 562 votes cast, but way out in front. Bryant did better than some expected. All about second preferences now. This could be a long night
PS we are waiting ten minutes to find out if anyone else will drop out before 2nd round of voting

It's a pretty weird event. I mean, it;s the only one without an actual Speaker sitting as Speaker. You might not get to see another one for a while.
Process is odd too. They all make a speech, then MPs go off to vote - ballot papers, not going into the aisles. If anyone gets over 50%, they win. MPs basically just keep on voting until someone can get past that threshold.

Did you know a foreign-owned cloud provider has access to online votes on their way to the digital ballot box? When electors in Canada’s Northwest Territories vote online, their ballots pass through @Cloudflare servers and are briefly decrypted while in transit.

PSA: If you’re applying to speak at an event, often the only thing those selecting a #speaker use to make selections is the talk title and description. So I have some #speaking tips to share when replying to a #CallforPapers or #CallForSpeakers...
1. If your title is confusing, weird, unclear, too cutesy, or it feels like you put no effort into it, that may work against you. Organizers want talks attendees will be interested in and it must be easy to understand what the talk is about based on the title alone
2. If your talk description is all about you, it’s only 1 sentence, it’s sarcastic/unprofessional, it isn’t aligned with the event focus/theme, or it’s totally self-serving, you might need to rethink things
