The finding about Grenfell’s cladding not being in line with building regulations should not be misunderstood as a statement that the government’s regulations (and deregulation) were not to blame for the fire (another thread) (sorry)
The crucial thing to understand is this: in the UK we have ‘performance based’ building standards instead of ‘prescriptive’ rules. That’s a political choice which was largely made in the 1980s.
That means the standard for external walls is just that they must “adequately resist the spread of flame”. It is essentially left up to builders and designers to figure out how best to do this

Somehow a narrative has developed that the Phase One report was all about firefighters and not about building failure.

That isn't true. Thread to follow:
Sir Martin has made some absolutely crucial findings that will define Phase Two and (probably) the legal battle over this for many years to come.

New: we have obtained letters which show PM's chief of staff @GavinBarwell did not act on multiple warnings on fire safety and building regulations in the lead up to #Grenfell - the last letter arriving just 26 days before the fire

The then housing minister became so bad at replying to MPs calling on him to implement the findings from Lakanal House that they resorted to sending the letters by recorded delivery

Over the last two weeks, WikiLeaks has targeted their army of twitter trolls against me, stemming from a unanimous decision from @freedomofpress's board. WikiLeaks and their trolls are spreading a lot of misinformation about this, so I thought I'd just clear it up. 1/x
In 2010, US government officials put pressure on Visa, MasterCard, PayPal, and Bank of America to stop processing payments for WikiLeaks. There was no court order, this was an extra-legal attempt to financially censor a news organization. 2/x
This was fucked up. Banks shouldn't have the power to shut down publishers, especially without legal process. What stops them from doing the same to Democracy Now, or whoever else? When I helped start FPF in 2012, we started processing payments for WL to bypass censorship. 3/x
