New: we have obtained letters which show PM's chief of staff @GavinBarwell did not act on multiple warnings on fire safety and building regulations in the lead up to #Grenfell - the last letter arriving just 26 days before the fire

The then housing minister became so bad at replying to MPs calling on him to implement the findings from Lakanal House that they resorted to sending the letters by recorded delivery
David Lammy: "This is yet another smoking gun in a man-made preventable tragedy that took the 72 lives at Grenfell Tower"
The same MPs had previously told Mr Barwell's predecessor that they were "at a loss" to understand why no action was being taken. They warned that the letters would be publicised if a tower block fire occurred.
Chancellor Philip Hammond also received a direct warning about building regs and sprinklers in January and February 2017. He referred the group back to Mr Barwell.

Like many people to have been on the wrong end of a Section 21 eviction, I'm very pleased to see it go/going.

A couple of little notes of caution though:
1. We don't have any timeline for this yet. Don't forget that the government announced its plans to ban letting agency fees in November 2016. They will finally be banned on 1 June this year. So don't expect this to move fast...
... which leaves us with the big elephant in the room - this is driven by the PM's office and she will almost certainly be gone before it comes into force.

Who can say if her replacement will feel the same.

Building regulations ONLY permit combustible insulation if it passes a large scale fire safety test known to nerds like me as BS-8414

It's a vitally important and valuable intervention, not least given the unwillingness of the official inquiry to consider human rights and the challenges people have had engaging with it. But I want to come back to a theme I wrote about last year....
I asked 'How could the residents of Grenfell have drawn upon – or had the means to draw upon – existing human rights law and standards in their struggle to make their homes safe and habitable?'

NEW: Downing Street confirms that Theresa May will be travelling to Brussels later this week to meet with EU chiefs. Her official spokesman said: “The Prime Minister is meeting Jean Claude Juncker on Thursday and obviously they will be discussing Brexit.”
It turns out that the PM’s chief-of-staff @GavinBarwell travelled to Brussels yesterday to meet European politicians and officials.
Does the PM recognise that what she previously said was an impossible ask, may well still be. “The discussions with the EU will not be easy," spox says she told Cabinet. "But Parliament has sent a clear message that changes to the backstop is the only way to get a deal approved.”
