I think much of this wrong on a practical level but it does provide a insight on why the Medicare for All fight on the left often seems so weird to outsiders. Some supporters don't view it as a solution to a problem but something way different 1/ jacobinmag.com/2019/11/medica…
Like if you treated Medicare for All as normal bill you won't care if Sanders or Warren won or if the compromise changed 15% of it but since it is meant to be the rallying point, the breaker of the Dem party, and redesigner of capitalism. It can only be Sanders M4A 2/
And since people are putting so much hope in Medicare for All magic power, you basically have people who just stop listening to facts or logic. You have people not trying to sell it to conservative Dem senators but people who want no compromise as a way to break con dems 3/
When you have people thinking M4A can transform all politics that is why people get weird about the need to ban duplicate private insurance which would be like 2% of the market and common in almost every other single payer country. It is not about health care policy 4/
Much of the activism around Medicare for All feels weirdly design to push out people who like the idea purely because they just want America to have an European style health care system 5/
When you realize that M4A is being treated not as a solution but a magical transformer. Some things make more sense. Like how when the movement realized the couldn't pass pure single payer state bills they didn't turn around and try to state bills that did 80% of it 6/
