Absolutely agree. People wait too long to boost signal, when "is it happening to just me?" Is the most valuable signal there is.

I will go on retweeting any jobs that are seeking (and set up to support) junior engineers, so keep them coming.
I generally have a very high opinion of @Netflix engineering, (is there no @netflixeng?) which is why it really, really pains me every time I think about their policy of only hiring (very) senior engineers.

I've heard all the arguments. I get it. I just think you're wrong.
I think there is a strong moral case to be made for hiring junior engineers once you can support them, and moral hazard in not doing so -- in freeloading off of others' investments.

But let's assume you've heard all that and are just as sure that I'm wrong. That's fine.

putting a bunch of engineers on a team calling them an "observability engineering team" does not, regrettably, mean you are getting any observability out of them or their work.

(no hate to the wonderful engineers on those teams, i know you didn't get to choose your title)
some ways to spot the difference:

⛔️ metrics, anything smells like statsd
✅ events, spans

Yes. There is a vast wilderness of problems and weirdness that are not (yet) serious enough or customer impacting enough to wake someone up.

Which is why you should spend some time looking at production Every. Day., and following your curiosity where it takes you.
It was established monitoring doctrine that "you shouldn't need to go look at graphs all the time, the system should alert you when it's broken."

You really do need to be in there looking at the code you are writing, through the lens of your instrumentation. Every day. Just poking around.

I don't care how good your test coverage is; if you aren't watching users use it in prod, you aren't done.

People can’t argue that Trump is owned by Putin, obstructing investigations, biggest security threat along w his criminal loyalists/family, giving rise to nazis, destroying Democracy and in the next breath say he shouldn’t be impeached. It’s one or the other
I honestly am so confused w this no impeachment argument. It’s not a difficult matter. Trump, Kushner, and all his criminal cronies are an extreme danger to America right now and to wait 2 more years with the strategy of winning election downplays the urgency of this threat
Holding impeachment hearings is about educating Americans and presenting evidence of all crimes/ threats to the public and showing we are a country of laws. It’s about showing how Russia and Trump’s regime conspired.

So, I started at Microsoft at the peak of stack ranking. Stack ranking (aka forced distribution) as it worked at Microsoft was, as I understood it: each manager starts with the assumption that 20% of your team are star performers, 10% need to be fired, & rest are in the middle.

2/ Starting even before Trump was inaugurated, Comey was writing memos detailing his and Trump's interactions. Comey knew they could potentially be used as evidence in a legal case against the president but no "line of inquiry" on Trump had been opened yet
3/ This is similar to what the FBI did in Mrs. Clinton's email case. The investigation is clearly about the principal (Trump or Clinton) but that person is not named as a target. It's a game of lawyerly tact and wordsmithing and it allows Comey to deny deny deny
