In essence, it boils down to what we at @ECThinkTank have long argued: EU (incl Germany) cannot afford "narrow view of the issue that prioritizes short-term economic interests and fails to uphold national security and democratic values."

From cyber-enabled espionage and data manipulation to outright disruption of critical services, horror scenarios aren't hard to imagine. #Huawei's goodwill assurances are hollow, as its susceptibility to #CCP party-state is enshrined in law, e.g. National Intelligence Law.

Besides security risks, economic cost of lock-in effects may also result in bad hangover. Even worse, though, are political costs of increased #EU dependency on "systemic rival" & "strategic competitor" #China.

While immediate security challenges of #5G rollout must be mitigated, Europe should also focus on the long run: #6G race will not be a sprint, but a marathon. Big R&D investments, a vibrant tech eco-system and fair competition are key to enable Western tech leadership.
