This is more or less the core argument of our book. We need to elect a pro-democracy president and congress, otherwise we'll lose the republic for good.
The GOP elites aren't dummies. They know the country is getting more diverse and more unequal, and they know that electorate doesn't like their agenda. They could moderate, but instead they seek to systematically make democracy less representative.
We lead the book with this doozy of a quote:

Thing is, that quote is 4 decades old! Trump is a grotesque, bile-spewing symptom, but he's a SYMPTOM of something much worse. Long after he's gone, the forces that allowed him to rise and thrive will remain.
Not to get too dramatic, but we view American democracy in pretty existential terms right now. In 15 months, we could have a pro-democracy congress and president passing republic-saving legislation. Or we'll be on the road to permanent white plutocracy.
