There's been a lot of talk about how much @TheGreenParty Green New Deal will 'cost', but let's think about what it could save per yr:
- £45bn in energy imports
- £10bn in petrol/diesel if 20% of people ditch their cars
- £6bn per year in lower public transport fares
- the planet
Also
- 30%+ lower home heating bills
- £bns in reduced traffic congestion
- £15bn due to reduced air pollution (currently cost economy £50bn+ per yr)
- fewer deaths & injuries from road collisions
- £10bns in lower housing costs
- £6bn per year in student loan repayments
And...
- £bns saved on childcare
- £10bns saved on managing poverty (currently spend £85bn per year according to @jrf_uk ) thanks to Universal Basic Income #UBI

I should have added it all up before, but we are probably saving the economy a lot of money overall

I have finally taken a look at @UKLabour 's detailed plans to get to net zero carbon by 2030. It is indeed bold, but I'm afraid it simply is not a serious attempt to make this happen

@UKLabour It omits virtually the entire transport sector, which is the largest source of GHG emissions

They have committed t to swap most petrol and diesel vehicles for electric ones, but have not made sufficient provision for the increase in electricity production this would require
@UKLabour It also makes little mention of the investment in battery power and storage that this massive increase in electric vehicles would require (except to say that it would be 'more viable')

It is AMAZING what the freshman "Justice Democrats" have "accomplished" in just SEVEN SHORT MONTHS! Even if Democrats *PRIMARY* ALL 3 OF THEM & their names are stripped off the gen. election ballots for Nov 2020, their terms won't end until Jan. 2021. EIGHTEEN MONTHS FROM NOW.
The internal polling shows why the House Democrats are suddenly moving to distance themselves from these totally disastrous newcomers, but it's far too late.

Trump is arguing that the Obama administration hurt the environment by losing manufacturing production to countries with environmental standards worse than those in the US. He uses the words "war," "punishing Americans," and "radical."

So NYC is finally imposing a congestion tax for lower Manhattan. This has long been an obviously good idea. Asking why it's finally happening now is, I'd argue, relevant to the national debate over some kind of Green New Deal. In fact, think of NYC as a mini-GND experiment 1/
The standard economist position on environmental issues, incl climate is, hey, it's a negative externality, so put a price on it via emissions taxes or equivalent -- full stop. But this is both dubious economics and bad political economy 2/
The econ is dubious because emission pricing is only part of what needs to be done. You also need public investments in infrastructure and new technology. The huge recent cost reductions in renewables didn't just happen -- they were partly the result of Obama-era investments 3/
