I made this thread because this stuff is *common*, we just don't really talk about it.

There's been a lot written about 'brownface' in Singapore in the last week. Conversations mostly seem to go like this:

"Hey that shit is offensive."
"No, it's funny."
"But it's like blackface."
"Blackface is from America, stop bringing up stupid liberal talk."
On 5 Aug, Indranee Rajah (Member of Parliament and a Minister) published a piece, mentioning how the Black and White Minstrel Show was 'quite acceptable' in the 60s and 70s.
Margaret Chan, a "cultural anthropologist" and retired prof writes another article 2 days later titled "'Brownface' is not Singaporean."

She says "It's the cosmopolitan Singaporean who has imported concepts like "brownface" and appropriation."

i legit don’t know whether to laugh or cry at this imaginary black market for gum. SG’s population is 7m. More people than that can’t afford insulin in the US, and there’s definitely a blavk market for that.

i get it- ${COUNTRY} BANS CHEWING GUM sounds fucking stupid. i can see why that might make headlines around the world. but people thinking you get caned for chewing gum are also fucking stupid. so here's some context- the chewing gum ban has been in place since 1992.

First, we have the stinkingly rich folks - they may even look unintelligent educationally, but they run countries, counties, states, communities.

For example, politicians, rulers, fortune 500 leaders, etc.
Secondly, we have the barely surviving folks - gosh, they are schooled (with good, fair and poor grades/certificates), they complain about the rich folks and how they steal all available money.

I struggled to get up at 4 am, that was because I stayed up till 2am thinking about my journey and battling the mosquitoes who wanted a last taste of my blood. Damn, persistent creatures.
I’m taking a cold bath to get my body active, 4:30 am and

@zeevs First, let’s rewind the timelines a little, and have a look at history. I hate the past and history, but as pure facts, it sometimes is needed.
@zeevs PHP emerged in its raw, primitive form, circa 1994. It’s now 25 years old. The first idea was to get rid of CGI backends, crashing segfaults, maintenance nightmare, not suited for a web world. All that in the form of scripts, parsed through a slower but safer interpreter.
