Intense protracted droughts. More frequent, higher intensity and larger fires. Longer fire seasons. Sound familiar? These are the predictions for much of Australia under climate change.
How does one boycott a government that refuses to accept the science and act on it?
And the most confusing signal from government on climate change. We don’t want to impact jobs and the economy. Surely not acting on climate change will have a much greater economic impact in the long term? Or do I misunderstand economics?
If refusal to act on climate change is being motivated by vested interests of carbon intense industry and lobbying of government, are the rest of society being thrown under a bus to satisfy the greed of a few?
If this is true at what point are the actions of government considered corrupt or criminally negligent? I seriously don’t know the answer to this.
I appreciate asking such questions at this point will be seen as insensitive. Fire sucks and has tragic emotional and economic impacts for everyone involved. But we need to talk about this now, not in the winter when it’s cold and wet.
Then of course the bit we all seem to forget. Our ecosystems & the species within them will suffer the tragic impacts of climate change. We are consistently pointing out that ecosystems could collapse, so is failure to act failing to meet our social obligation to the environment?
Every year that passes without appropriate government action on climate change makes me think something I wrote long ago could actually happen. Maybe it would be easiest for the government just to arrest scientists. johnwhitewildlife.com/2016/05/09/tod…
We have been documenting the response of mammals to climate and fire in the Grampians NP in Victoria for a long time now. Climate change has real potential for species to become regionally extinct onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…
