On one hand, Pete is being unfairly smacked around for the misquote — he didn't attack Obama.

But I'd still like him to clarify the real quote. What "failures of the old normal" gave us Trump exactly? In what way does he think Trump was a referendum on the status quo?
It sounds to me like Pete is basically repeating the canard that Trump was somehow a rebellion against a social or economic status quo.

I don't think he was. I think he is best understood as a *reassertion* of the status quo, against fears of demographic and cultural change.
I get that Pete is from the Midwest, and it is politically polite to describe Trump that way there.

But I just wish I had more confidence Pete understood Trumpism, given that he wants to take the lead role in defeating it.

This thread is harsh, but true.

Warren and Sanders' social programs are 100% possible. But their promise to fund it all by soaking corporations and the ultra-wealthy isn't. Countries that have programs like theirs have to tax the middle class to do it.
And for the record, we absolutely should tax the rich more. More brackets, higher estate tax and AMT, corporate tax deferral and step up in basis should be restricted, and we should enact a tax on stock buybacks and LBOs.

But none of that will fund Medicare for All.
I think you can argue — and I frequently have — that Warren and Sanders' tax plans aren't just about raising revenue, but about redistributing financial and political power so no one person can control whole industries. That's fair. And I think that's a reasonable goal. BUT...

Right-wing firestarters like Don Jr. and Kimberley Guilfoyle (and Charlie Kirk, and Ben Shapiro, and Milo, and all these trainwrecks) don't REALLY want to speak on college campuses. They just want to bait students into running them off campus, so they can martyrize themselves.
That's why none of these people ever try to connect with their audience, speak about common ground issues, or really do anything at all that would be conducive to constructive political dialogue.

They just go, you're all a bunch of cucked libtards, throw us out I dare you.
Fact is, studies show time and again that college students are among the *most* open-minded demographic to listening to new political ideas.

I love all the Republicans claiming Matt Bevin's loss isn't really indicative of anything — Bevin was just a bombastic, bullying asshole who picked petty personal fights.

The thing is, if those things can make a Republican lose a red state, that's kind of a bad sign for Trump!
Trump is a successful politician because he's so entertaining to his supporters that they don't even think of it like real politics — they don't bother trying to connect what he's doing to their real lives.

With Bevin, voters just couldn't do that when the rubber met the road.
The real risk for Trump has always been that at some point, some number of the voters who love watching him terrorize brown people or pick fights with The Libs suddenly realize, hey, I lost my farm and my health care.

Kentucky just showed us what it looks like when that happens.

So a reporter supposedly got a quote wrong about Pete but people on twitter—who read a news article and reacted to what they read—are supposed to prostrate themselves and apologize for tweeting about and reacting to an article they read.

Make it make sense.
And whether this is a nonsense cover-up or not, the quote it is very in character with a lot of other arrogant bullshit this man has been spewing over the last couple of weeks since he decided that being a jerk is the way to run.
And besides, what does “the failures of the old normal gave us trump” mean? It is racist ass white people that gave us trump.
