The most balanced book I know about the Spanish Civil War is Antony Beevor's "The Battle for Spain".

Beevor's book chronicles the atrocities of the right as well as any I've read, but it also chronicles the mistakes and misdeeds of the Spanish left.

For example, no other book I've read emphasizes the importance of the failed 1934 revolution:

Beevor also goes into detail about the insane totalitarian state that the Spanish communists were building (by brutalizing and massacring leftists) even as they were stubbornly sticking to a losing war strategy.
