I’ve done two social media/open science talks this week and got some really interesting questions from people who are a little hesitant to use these tools—which is fine!

Here are some of the questions I got and my responses... 🧵
1. What if my work gets publicly criticized?

Considering the sheer volume of work that’s shared on twitter, only a very small percentage of work gets critiqued. But if this happens to be *your* work, this can really sting—there’s no dancing around that.
This is happened to me before, I know the feeling. But...
Of course, there should be NO place for personal attacks (don’t hesitate to block or mute people) but *constructive critiques* on preprints can be incredibly helpful—short term pain for long term gain
2. Is social media only for extroverts?

I would argue this medium is *ideal* for introverts, considering that I’m an introvert myself—tweet from the comfort of your home! Another bonus is that it’s a great conference ice-breaker, “Hey, I know you from twitter...”
3. How can you use twitter threads to share a new paper?

Here’s how and why
4. Can I just lurk?

Of course! You can still learn a TON just by watching but I think you can get even more out of twitter if you contribute
5. What if the journal I want to submit to doesn’t accept preprints?

The list of journals that don’t accept preprints is *very* small. Very few fields are THAT small that you won’t have at least a few submissions options. Don’t let this stop you from submitting a preprint
