The one argument that I don't see enough about #Medicare4All is that it's not just an issue of economics. It's an issue of freedom. I don't mean "freedom from debt." Listen:
If you have health insurance through your job, you are tied to that job. Sure, you might change jobs if you're lucky enough/talented enough/in demand enough. Still, you're only going to do so if you're guaranteed health insurance.
Because if you have insurance, especially if your family is covered by it, you are just not going to do anything that could rock that boat. You are, in essence, a captive to a job because of health insurance.
If you want to start your own company or, god forbid, try to do something on your own, you can't because of the fear of loss of insurance. Imagine what you'd do if you didn't have that worry. Oh, wait, I can tell you a story:
My brother-in-law was in a job he despised. He had some ideas for how he could become a freelancer in the same field and offer better services. He didn't do that until the Affordable Care Act was passed.
Once he was able to get insurance for his family without his job (and, no, it's not great insurance because Republicans have messed up Obamacare so badly and intentionally), he started his business.
And it was so successful that he ended up needing to hire people. His freedom to create something new created jobs.
We talk about innovation and the American dream and, yes, freedom all the time. And, obviously, people followed their dreams without worrying about the insurance side of things in the past.
But imagine the freedom of knowing you have health care for the rest of your life. And your spouse has it. And your kids. Imagine what you might be able to do. Imagine what so many people could achieve.
Conservatives like to talk about Medicare for All like it's a communist plot to enslave everyone to the government. But we are already owned in a way by our need to keep our health care. At least the government is, in theory, owned by all of us.
What I'd argue, then, is that if you oppose Medicare for All, you oppose freedom. You are saying that you want American workers to not take risks for fear of losing health insurance.
There's your talking point. #Medicare4All means freedom, freedom from medical debt, absolutely, but also freedom to create and grow. (end)
