LAM ADESINA

Lam Adesina was born on 20 January 1939. He was a teacher, historian, philosopher and politician. He was a member of the House of Representatives from 1979-1983, the Second Republic, on the platform of the Awolowo led Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN).
He used his newspaper column to rattle the conscience of the state. He didnot shy away from wielding his pen and voice against the military governments that strangulated the Nigerian State.
He died to uphold his philosophy of siding with the poor for a better Nigeria. He died to redeem his ambition for the wholesale transformation of the health infrastructures for the wellbeing of the people.
He was the philosopher who died in the bed of African pride. He didnot jet out to the white man’s land for healthcare. If the poor died in Nigeria for lack of healthcare it was unimaginable to take advantage of his status to receive treatment abroad.
He made the ultimate journey leaving behind a message of good conscience, yet the state fails to understand why the common good is the supreme law.

~E. Obilo
But he has his place in the comity of leaders of time who scaled the obstacles on our path to reasonable politics.

His death on 11 November 2012 was a reminder that politics in the interest of the common good should prevail in our dealings with one another.
As a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the Third Republic, he fought for the validation of the June 12 election. Using Afenifere and National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) platforms, he and others pushed the marauding Abacha regime to a breaking point.
He was detained, but that made him more resolute to fetch for society water of hope. To the the credit of the struggle is the subtle democracy the state enjoys.
Lam was the governor of Oyo State from 1999 - 2003. He had a deep philosophy of society and understood clearly the intrigues of the minds that shape it. He found himself in the rowdy politics that distracted from the philosophical leadership he stood for.
