I talk about this with Thomas Mann on tomorrow's Impeachment, Explained, but the asymmetric polarization discourse makes it sound like everything is about issue positions. But issue positions are only one axis of polarization.
The relevant one for impeachment is attitudes towards the norms of the political system itself. Having two parties sharply polarized across left/right issue positions doesn't mean you'll have two parties sharply polarized on whether it's okay to abuse presidential power.

The problem with the Republican Party isn't that it's become "too conservative." Depending on your definition, I don't think it even is conservative. The problem with the Republican Party is it's become too Trumpist.
