I said it many times. I think people whose eyes are watering, gulping water, sweating, and telling me they enjoy it are doing it because they are somehow trying to embrace an authentic experience, not because they like it. I know many people love it. Me, I don't. /1
I like Mexican food (at least what I've had in Mexico and the southwest), but I feel the same way when my friends order it with all the peppers in the joint, and are red-faced and sweaty and telling me it's awesome. I just don't believe that's fun, it's foodie acting. /2
I think people often pretend to like non-American cuisines as a way of showing sophistication. I'm honest enough to say that my mostly Irish taste buds can't handle whatever it is that is called "Indian" in the US and UK.

And now, as a coda to this insane discussion about food, I will add one more point. It is revealing when people say "You will love it if you have enough of the right kind of it." That's like an American saying "if you eat enough American food you'll learn how great it is." /1
This would drive Michelin chefs, foodies, and people from cultures around the word into a paroxysm of fury. Because it *is* dumb to think that the best clam chowder or chili dogs will somehow make you more sophisticated and educate your palate. If you don't like it, you don't. /2
But 24 hours of outrage about whether it's racist to tease Americans about whether they *really* like Indian food from one comment in response to a call for controversial food takes is about as crazy as Twitter gets.

Also, Led Zeppelin still sucks.

Also, mini-thread on the GOP and particularly Stefanik's other stupid point about Obama and Ukraine. I was super-critical of Obama's decision, so I'm not just covering for Obama here. It was a bad decision, but it wasn't illogical and fit with Obama's (bad) policy. /1
First, the Americans had real concerns about the previous regime, and whether weapons would get to the people who needed them. Second, Obama (rightly or wrongly) was concerned about escalating the conflict before negotiations had been played out. (Wrongly, in my view.). /2
Third, some of our European allies were worried about the same thing, and wanted more time. Obama assumed Clinton would win - bad call - and deal with it as an ongoing issue. Finally, Obama was focused (wrongly) on the Iran deal and didn't want Russia to trash it. /3

Okay, since the Republicans are going down this road, a quick explainer.
GOP questioners are saying that the President has the right to hold up legally-approved aid.
He does. But that's not what happened here. They're counting on their supporters being too stupid to know it. /1
The President can determine if a country has not met the legal conditions for providing aid. If Country X has a bad human rights record, and the aid says "on condition that Country X stop arresting dissidents," POTUS can choose to determine the conditions have not been met. /2
But those are *public* conditions in the aid package, usually made as a determination after interagency working groups have advised the President that Country X is or isn't in compliance with the conditions of the aid. Congress, if it disagrees, can query WH officials. /3

People really aren’t considering what fundamentalist religion does to women in a patriarchy.

It’s completely reasonable to wonder what’s up with white women but a lot of the rhetoric coming from women on the right is straight from doctrine.
Like, I don’t think people understand the degree to which women are taught that if men feel lust that’s because we tempted them somehow - and that “temptation” might just be that we smiled too widely.
There is no such thing in many churches as male sexual misconduct: they get in trouble for breaking vows or committing adultery. The misconduct and blame are the problem of the women involved.
