Then remember that nuclear plants are being replaced by natural gas right now...

Very interesting new research from @RBrulle which maps the organization of climate denial over the past few decades.

Many groups across numerous sectors of the economy fueled climate denial.

@RBrulle While we rightly focus a lot the oil and gas sector's role in climate denial, many other industries were heavily involved, including utilities, coal, rail companies and conservative groups more broadly.
@RBrulle I often think the climate denial campaign is the biggest cover-up in history. And the most consequential one.

It's a pretty dramatic story. Wish more journalists were interested in covering it! So much for "boring" climate change.

For many people tipping points are the most frightening thing about climate change (and that's up there for me) but what really scares me are stocks. Or to be more precise, what really scares me is knowing something about stocks, and knowing that tipping points are out there.
In #systemsthinking a stock is anything that accumulates. The vehicle fleet, the stock of housing, all the iPhones in the world, etc.
The thing about stocks is that they change SLOWLY. The average fuel efficiency of vehicles changes as older cars are scrapped and new ones come online. Even if the new vehicles have much better fuel efficiency than the old ones, the average for the whole fleet changes slowly.

This is NOT the "new normal." In fact it's far worse.

Climate breakdown is a ramp we're on which will get continuously more catastrophic the more fossil fuel we burn and the more forest we kill.

This is just the beginning. I am genuinely, deeply sorry. I don't make the rules.
No matter how bad things get it will ALWAYS make sense to do everything we can to stop it, at every scale from individual to community to national to international.

Climate breakdown isn't a binary, on or off. Neither is ecological breakdown.
This gorgeous Earth is incredibly precious and unique in the known universe. The known universe, by the way, is generally not exactly friendly to human life. We all walk on a very cool spaceship.

How could we protect humanity and the natural world at this late hour?
A thread.

There is still a brief opportunity for humanity to wake up and fight back against the accelerating climate and ecological crises with everything we have.
If the the United States and other countries mobilized like we did for WWII- huge investment of resources, strong command and control regulations, all hands on deck participation- we could accomplish absolutely amazing things:
A ban on all new fossil fuel infrastructure and exploration, followed by a 10-year planned early retirement of our existing fossil fuel capacity. Massive renewable energy production and national conservation project -winterizing every home and building- to keep the lights on.

Most historic emissions occurred in the developed world (US, EU, etc), while most of the future emissions are in the developing world (China, India, etc).

The coal fleet is very young in the China & India (right). Easy for the developed world to quit coal, as the coal fleet is dead anyway.

Surprising how much gas is being built in the developing world (right). The US spike (green) 15 yrs ago is why coal to gas happened fast!

Today much of the world's population lives safer, more comfortable, healthier, longer, more productive lives than ever before. And yet, around half of the global population currently lacks access to enough electricity, and 1.2bn people have no access at all. #IPCC 1/n
Global electricity access is rising, which is improving the lives of millions. But this means our decarbonisation challenge is even greater, since we not only have to replace our entire fossil fuel infrastructure, but probably double it to meet rising global energy demand. #IPCC
The question is where will this energy to come from? A: Right now, mainly from #coal. #IPCC
