@ElizabethaRush Apart from being a finalist for the Pulitzer, RISING is also @ucsantabarbara’s 2020 pick for UCSB Reads — a program where everyone on campus reads the same book! For locals, I’ll also be giving a talk on campus about the book on Tuesday January 28th.
@ElizabethaRush @ucsantabarbara In February, AKA Black History Month, we will read @OctaviaEButler’s book, Parable of the Sower and @MaryHeglar will be back as our cohost!

Kudos to @nytimes for writing this great piece on climate action!

I find it strange, however, how they describe how "no one used to care much about climate impacts" but never discuss the media's central responsibility for that result.

@nytimes Here's some great research by @boykoff + @JulesBoykoff that shows that the @nytimes and other major outlets gave an enormous amount of space to climate deniers' talking points.

@nytimes @boykoff @JulesBoykoff Here's a favorite paper from @J_Farrell showing that the exact language used in climate denier reports ended up in the media.

The media has had a lot of time and space for climate denial. Perhaps this is why people weren't that worried for quite a while?

I love Costa! And I love how many of you want to feel hope!

But remember: research shows to keep warming to 1.5° C we cannot build ANY NEW fossil fuel infrastructure.

Then remember that nuclear plants are being replaced by natural gas right now...

"Committed emissions from existing and proposed energy infrastructure (about 846 gigatonnes CO2) thus represent more than the entire carbon budget that remains" for 1.5 °C.

Very interesting new research from @RBrulle which maps the organization of climate denial over the past few decades.

Many groups across numerous sectors of the economy fueled climate denial.

@RBrulle While we rightly focus a lot the oil and gas sector's role in climate denial, many other industries were heavily involved, including utilities, coal, rail companies and conservative groups more broadly.
@RBrulle I often think the climate denial campaign is the biggest cover-up in history. And the most consequential one.

It's a pretty dramatic story. Wish more journalists were interested in covering it! So much for "boring" climate change.

"From 9th to 11th August, Delhi-based group Jan Natya Manch (Janam) had come to Mumbai with their play "Tathagat". On August 10th, the play was staged at the Ambedkar Bhavan in Dadar. The police arrived at the venue and made inquiries about the play."
"The next day in Andheri, at the Harkat Studio, 2 CID cops from Versova police station landed at the small auditorium and started taking photographs of the set. After this, they started making enquiries about Sudhanva Deshpande, the leader of the folk-theatre group."

Many faculty are often frustrated that students seem to have a poor understanding of the literature, or are surprised when students don’t know the “big names" in their field. However, one must realize it is easy to get “pigeon-holed” while you are focusing on your MS/PhD
Reading groups are one way to address this issue – meet weekly or bi-weekly and read literature in a given field. However, too often reading groups are dominated by faculty/postdocs with more experience and students are afraid to speak up for fear of ridicule or embarrassment.

#Thread Went to Vizhinjam coast to meet the fishermen who took part in rescue mission in #KeralaFloods . We were filled with positive energy and happiness hearing their experiences (1/n)
We dedicated almost 2 pages for celebrating their mission.On Thursday 8.10 pm Fr.Justin Judin,vicar of Vizhinjam church announced the requirement for boats through public announcement system. In 20 minutes almost 50 boats and 100 fishermen were assembled. Military like formation!
Just see the Engine fan of a fishing boat which participated in the #KeralaFloods rescue mission. Most of the boats are damaged and they won't be able to go to sea for a while. I was blown away by their sacrifice (3/n)
